Spear’s field grade cap is reflective of a man conscious of his standing yet a man in common with the hard fought foot
soldiers of his 20th Maine Volunteers. A nicely tailor made, private purchase cap with quilted lining is yet plain to the eye
and in the style of the common soldier’s forage cap.  His sword too is a finely styled silver griped example befitting the grade
yet is stout with the heavy blade and the iron drag of a working weapon.  Heavy wear and the mark of a projectile strike in
the heavy steel scabbard offers good evidence of field use and carrying.
